AB InBev buys another craft brewery in Brazil
BE Cervejas da Colorado

The purchase of a new craft brewery in Brazil by one of the giant beer conglomerate. Ambev, the Brazilian branch of AB InBev bought Cervejaria Colorado, from the city of Ribeirao Preto, one of the main references in the Brazilian craft beer market.

The Brazilian brewery is 20 years old and is now part of the largest beer conglomerate in the world. This is the second deal that Ambev closed this year. In February, they acquired Wals, a brewery from the city of Belo Horizonte who has won Brazilians first gold medal in the World Beer Cup.

This morning, José Felipe Carneiro, from Wals welcomed the new brewery in his Instagran: "Welcome to the team Papa Bear (Colorado’s nickname)! There is no one in Brazil who worked more for the craft beer cause than you. We are so happy! Cervejaria Colorado, Wals and Bohemia together in one project !!"

On Brejas website , Marcelo Carneiro, founder and owner, explained what will be his role now: "My job is international consultant, for a minimum of five years. My task will be to open new roads for Colorado, talk to business partners, represent the brand that I fought for 20 years. My fight has always been and will continue to facilitate the consolidation of a typically Brazilian brewing school, and it will never be abandoned."

He also explained the reason for the deal: "We were at a level of growth where investors are needed. There is no option but to grow. Grow to survive. We were searching for a partner for a while and ABInBev came to us in excellent time. Now it is time to grow!"

According to Marcelo also, the beer recipes will remain the same and all employees will be retained.

Colorado is one of the main pillars of the Brazilian craft beer market and a major player in this segment growth in the last two decades.

Below is the brewery’s official ad on Facebook in English. (The Portuguese version in hereunder as well!)

"Dear friends of the bear, we are very happy to oficialize to you that now Colorado is part of the Ambev group, with Bohemia Brewery! In 1995, our founder, Marcelo Carneiro, started his journey in this country and put Colorado in the international market, solidifying a company who has revenues of R$18 million (around US$5 million) per year. For the last 20 years, we’ve worked with dignity and fought in favor of the craft beer. We paved a way with many prizes, authenticity which will be even better now!
We will continue to elaborate recipes typically Brazilians, our DNA. The union of the brands will allow us to grow our Colorado’s distribution capacity and, of course, will allow our dear Marcelo to dedicate even more time to the search of new ingredients.
Our commitment with good craft beer lovers keeps strong and the dream which unify both breweries is the appreciation of the Brazilian beer, with local ingredients and brewed for consumers of every state. To get together is to make this dream come true, a dream of a Brazilian school of beer. A toast and a good bye from the bear!"

Aside from beer making, AB InBev has had a busy three months, selling its Australian subsidiary Carlton United Breweries to Asahi for $11 billion and raising about $5.6 billion for a second attempt to float part of its Asian business.
