Craft beer is the solution!

At the end of 2014, there were more than 3.400 craft breweries across America. The numbers of this segment are impressive: while the total beer market has increased only 0,4% in the last year, craft beers grew 18% in volume and 22% in sales to reach an amazing 11% volume share of the beer marketplace for the first time. The sales of $19,6 billions represent 19,3% of the market share.

This growth has attracted the eyes of state legislatures. Craft breweries create an almost unique environment for the area where it is located. The companies not only create an important number of new jobs in their breweries, but also attract a great amount of tourists to the area with festivals, tasting events or even with the simple brewery visits.

A good example is DogFish Head. They created a weekend package where you can experience the local community in Delaware, while learning about their beers. The experience starts in their own hotel and includes a boat ride and meals on the main local restaurants.

Many states are working to change their beer laws to create a healthy environment for craft breweries, supporting the existing ones and try to attract expansion projects from well-established breweries from other states.

This is the case of Asheville, North Carolina, who created the right environment for the expansion projects of Sierra Nevada, New Belgium and Oskar Blues.

Another city with a similar project is Richmond Virgina. The city landed a deal with Stone Brewing Company to receive their East Cost expansion project. Stone will invest $74 million in the first three years and generate almost 300 direct jobs. The brewery expects to reach revenues of $100 million on their 4th year of live in Richmond.

The city had to change its franchise, distribution and alcohol sales laws to make Stone’s life easier. The critical change was to allow taprooms inside the breweries. The city and state put together a package of almost $40 million in bonds or funds to make Stone project’s possible.

States are always looking for the next big thing to create new jobs and all kinds of different revenues for its population and they found in craft beer some great partners that will give their state what they need in this modern time: new jobs, new revenues and tons of media presence, to attract more tourists every day.
